STATEMENT
My work is interdisciplinary and investigates musical concepts and theories, the relationship between color, form, texture, proportion and pitch, harmony, timbre, and rhythm. The content of the work also includes references to infinite cycles of time and planetary motion and the ultimate interconnection of all our perceptions.

As an artist, I feel the links between visual and audio media very deeply. I believe that abstract painting and music are closely related aesthetically, conceptually, scientifically and intuitively. I have also investigated the mathematical relationship between the ratios found in planetary motion and the ratios of the diatonic and chromatic musical scales discovered in the seventeenth century by astronomer Johannes Kepler and inspired by theories that have their origins in the ancient Greeks, Babylonians, Egyptians, and Chinese. I am attempting in my work to make the relationships between these physical and aesthetic phenomenon, the scientific and artistic, visible and tangible. I would like the work to present new ways of looking at nonobjective painting and sculpture and new insights into the structure and elements of music. The work also speaks of the universal and infinite nature and language of color, music, measurement and pattern and of the possibility of using this language to find and communicate qualities which bring people and ideas together and give us a glimpse of a larger, all inclusive order.

In addition to my studio work, for the last five years I have been active in the public art arena completing projects for the cities of Anaheim, Escondido, Laguna Beach, Sunnyvale and West Hollywood in California and in Reno, NV. I am currently working on a project for the City of Ventura, CA. Prior to that I spent fifteen years producing large interactive, three dimensional, interdisciplinary installations that were used for performance works in collaboration with choreographers and composers. The majority of the time they are on view, however, they form participatory visual/sound environments for the viewing public to "perform in", play in, investigate, and contribute. Several of my large public art works are participatory as well and many of my studio pieces have audio elements.

The participatory, playful, musical qualities of the wall works and sculptures have a special appeal to children and individuals attracted to music or the performing arts. The work also has a conceptual and scientific basis found in physics and mathematics, which interests those who appreciate systems and the interrelationship of ideas. The pieces can engage those who are not often drawn into a dialogue with visual art. The geometric, archetypal patterns often used in my work are universally meaningful symbols that transcend time and culture and can actually be found in every culture from every continent on the globe.

Another primary concern of my painting is the relationship that exists between musical pitch and color. I believe this relationship is more than a subjective and emotional one, it is a logical and natural linking of two measurable phenomena. The system of color I use is based on simple physics. The colors of the twelve-hue color wheel are assigned to the twelve equal-tempered pitches in an octave of music. Both color and pitch move from lowest to highest frequency. Using the range of the piano keyboard, the hues of the low pitches are low in intensity and value, which relates to the rich, full overtones of the low frequency vibrations. Each pitch than becomes 1/12 lighter and brighter than the preceding one. The hues of the high pitches are very light just as the high frequency vibrations are thin and clear. If the system is logical the colors should relate harmonically in the same way as musical tones and translate into an accurate visual representation of the linear construction of the music, seen as a whole - all at once. Linear measurement represents meter and duration. Form and texture represent timbre and the intensity and layering of sound.
